Breakdown

Flanker Drive out of Shotgun Doubles Offset lines up with three receivers to the flanker side and a tight end/back combo to the boundary. The flanker runs a drive route sitting hard underneath, the outside receiver on that side clears vertically up the seam, and the backside slot receiver on the far numbers works a deep dig across the middle of the field. Underneath, the tight end runs a shallow crosser to the flat while the running back releases to a quick out, giving the quarterback an easy checkdown against pressure. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and hash defenders, with the primary read starting on the deep dig, then working down to the drive route, and finally checking down to the flat and out combo underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties evenly spread since that quarters shell is exactly what this concept is designed to attack through the dig and seam combo. Post-snap, watch the flanker side outside linebacker or slot corner, if he sinks with the drive route the dig will have a bigger throwing lane, if he jumps the drive route the quarterback should already be resetting to the dig. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 sky or Cover 1 man look with a deep middle robber since the dig has to cross through a crowded intermediate zone with a spy or lurking linebacker. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle hole, that lurk threat is the biggest risk to the dig route and can bait a costly interception. Against blitz heavy looks, key the running back's out route and the tight end's flat route as the answer, since both give a quick outlet before the pass rush closes the pocket.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safeties splitting the field evenly before the snap, that alignment tips Cover 4 and this play is designed specifically to exploit it. Start your eyes on the deep dig crossing the field because it exploits the seam defenders vacating in quarters coverage, and if the window is tight, work down to the drive route sitting at the sticks. Use this on second and medium to second and long when you expect a zone shell rather than man coverage since the crossing routes take longer to develop against tight man coverage. Hot route the running back into a wider flat or a check release if you see a blitz look with only five defenders in the box. Pair this play in sequence with Double Slants or Slant Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and the deeper dig concept, since both plays share a similar pre-snap look but attack different levels.
