PA Rollout out of Shotgun Doubles Offset shows a play-action fake to the backfield with the quarterback rolling right off the boot to gain an outside pocket. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical, the slot receiver on that side works a corner style breaking route into the vacated deep zone, and to the play side the tight end (or slot) releases on a shallow drag that climbs into the flat directly in the rollout lane while the outside receiver on that side attacks vertically and snaps off into a deep out. The primary read starts with the flat/drag route since it is the built in easy completion off the roll, then progresses to the deep out breaking route if the flat defender squeezes down, with the deep vertical shots on the backside as home run answers versus busted man coverage or blown zone assignments. This is a play-action rollout designed to attack both man and zone coverage by moving the pocket and giving the quarterback a clear horizontal stretch read.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender and any curl to flat defender at the snap, if they sink deep to take away the breaking route the drag underneath will be wide open on the rollout. Key the backside safety rotation, if he stays deep and over the top it signals zone coverage and the deep out breaking route becomes the higher percentage throw over the vertical shot. Identify blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge to the rollout side, since a well timed edge blitz can collapse the pocket before the quarterback gets outside the tackle box on the boot. Look for user controlled linebackers spying the quarterback or lurking in the shallow flat zone, this defensive read can jump the drag route and turn it into a turnover if you stare it down. Against man coverage, check if the defense presses the outside receiver running the deep out, since press man leaves the corner vulnerable to the double move nature of the vertical into the breaking route.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or manageable third and medium situations where the defense is respecting the run fake, since the play action sell is what creates the horizontal stretch on the rollout side.

Check the flat defender and curl to flat defender before the snap, if they are sitting tight to the line the drag route will be there immediately as your first read on the rollout.

Use the deep out breaking route as your primary answer versus zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the corner squats and the flat defender widens with the drag.

Hot route the backside vertical into a dig or comeback against aggressive man coverage corners who like to jump underneath routes, this keeps the play a true man beater if the defense shows press man pre-snap.

Pair this with Double Slants or Slant Flat from the same set to keep the defense honest on quick game, then hit them with PA Rollout once linebackers start flowing hard on early down run fakes.
