Slot Outs from Shotgun Doubles Offset shows two vertical routes on the outside from both wide receivers, clearing the deep half and stretching the cornerbacks downfield. The slot receiver to the strong side runs a quick out to the flat while the TE or attached slot runs a shallow out that crosses underneath, and the running back releases into a check release out route as well, giving the quarterback layered horizontal options underneath the two verticals. This is primarily a zone beater that attacks the flats and hook zones vacated by cover 3 or cover 4 shells, with the primary read progression starting at the quick out breaking to the boundary, then working to the crossing out route underneath, and finally the check release back if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender pre-snap since a defender sitting too deep or too wide will telegraph whether the quick out or the crossing out route will be open first. Watch for cover 2 or cover 4 shells where the corners sink under the verticals, since this forces the quarterback into the shorter underneath throws which user defenders can jump if they read the quarterback's eyes. If the defense shows a two high safety look pre-snap, expect the outside verticals to be capped, meaning the underneath outs become the primary read and defenders should sit on those routes. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of the quick out since it requires a fast release, so a well timed edge blitz or nano blitz can force an early or inaccurate throw. Man coverage with an aggressive slot corner jumping the out route route can bait a pick six if the quarterback stares down the flat throw, so disciplined user lurking near the sticks is key against this concept.

Usage Tips

Look pre-snap for cover 3 or cover 4 shells since the two verticals will occupy the deep defenders and open the flat throws underneath.

Use the quick out as your first read against zone since it beats the underneath defender before he can flow to the sideline, especially on early downs to stay ahead of the chains.

Against man coverage, hot route the vertical routes into slants or hitches since straight verticals are less effective against tight man press, and rely on the underneath out routes to work rub concepts.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Mesh Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both a vertical shot and quick underneath game from the same formation look.

This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the quick outs are designed to gain yardage before the sticks with high percentage completions.
