Four Verticals out of Shotgun Doubles Offset sends both outside receivers straight upfield on vertical routes while the slot receiver runs a seam route and the inline TE releases up the middle of the field on a fourth vertical stem. All four eligible receivers stretch the field top to bottom, forcing every defensive back to declare depth and leverage immediately. This is a classic man beater against single high looks and a zone beater against Cover 2 and Cover 3, with the primary read progression starting at the seam route, working to the middle vertical, then working outside based on the safety rotation.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since this play is designed to exploit the seam and hash areas those coverages leave open. Watch the free safety's depth and break at the snap, a late rotation to one side tells you which vertical route will have a favorable one on one matchup. Key the Mike linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the middle hook zone he can take away the inside seam and force you to work the boundary verticals instead. Cover 2 shells are vulnerable to the seam route splitting the two deep safeties, but disciplined corners playing outside leverage in Cover 2 can squeeze the outside verticals and make you hold the ball. Beware of user controlled safeties baiting a throw to the seam then jumping the route late, and watch for delayed blitzes off the edge since the deep routes take time to develop and leave the quarterback exposed.

Usage Tips

Check the safety count before the snap, if you see two high safeties widen your seam read to attack the void between them, if you see one high safety take the outside verticals against the corners. Use your hot routes to convert the TE's vertical into a seam if the middle of the field is clogged by a Mike linebacker sitting in a hook zone. This play thrives on third and long or two minute situations where you need explosive plays and are willing to trade sack risk for a big shot downfield. Pair Four Verticals with Mesh Spot or Drag Under from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the deep shell without opening up underneath crossers. Against aggressive man coverage teams, motion the slot receiver pre-snap to confirm man or zone before committing to your first read.
