Y-Sail from Shotgun Doubles Offset is a classic three level flood concept run to the strong side of the formation. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route to clear out the top of the defense, the Y (tight end) runs the sail route to the flat area at intermediate depth, and the inside slot receiver runs a shallow crossing route underneath, while the backside receiver runs a comeback breaking outside. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by stretching one side of the field vertically, horizontally, and underneath, and the primary read progression starts high to low: corner route first, then the sail route to the flat, then check down to the crossing route underneath.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the sail route the corner route will be wide open behind him. Watch for user controlled safeties sitting in the deep half or deep third, if they jump the corner route immediately the sail route underneath becomes the answer. Man coverage with no help over the top shuts this down quickly since the corner route loses its window and the sail route runs into trailing defenders instead of soft zone. Look for underneath linebackers spying or blitzing off the edge, a nano blitz on the strong side can disrupt the sail route timing and force an early checkdown. If the defense shows Cover 4 or Cover 6 with a hard flat drop, the crossing route underneath becomes the quickest and safest completion against the numbers advantage.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing a two high or single high shell before the snap since this determines which level of the flood concept will be open.
Against Cover 3, look for the sail route in the flat since the corner route occupies the deep third defender and the flat defender has to choose between the sail and the crossing route underneath.
Against Cover 2, the corner route is your primary target since it sits in the void between the cornerback's flat zone and the safety's deep half.
Hot route the backside comeback into a deeper dig or post if you are getting single coverage on that side, this gives you a true half field option away from the flood.
Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Comeback Seam in the same set so the defense has to respect the deep shots off similar formation looks, then come back to Y-Sail on second and medium or third and short to punish zone drops.
