Breakdown

Y-Sail out of Shotgun Doubles Offset stretches the field vertically with a classic three-level concept on the play side. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route (the red vertical breaking to the sideline), the TE or slot runs the intermediate sail route breaking flat to the numbers, and the backside receivers run a dig and flat combo to hold linebackers and safeties. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression going high to low: corner route first to attack the deep half or deep third, then working down to the sail/flat route underneath as the safety or corner rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high safety, this dictates whether the corner or the sail route will be open. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the sail route the corner route window opens up on top of him. Key the deep half or deep third defender's break, a slow reaction to the corner route means the quarterback should already be releasing that throw. Against zone blitz looks, identify the extra rusher immediately since the sail concept becomes vulnerable if the hot route flat defender is also blitzing. Man coverage with press corners is dangerous for the offense here since the corner route can get squeezed, look for the QB to check down to the underneath dig or flat instead of forcing the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Read the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and prioritize the corner route to attack the seam between the corner and safety. Against Cover 3 with a single high safety, work the sail route underneath the deep third defender since the corner route will likely be taken away. Use the flat route as a check down against zone blitzes or when the corner route and sail are both blanketed, it is a quick answer versus five or six man pressure. Hot route the backside dig into a quick out or slant if you are facing man coverage with no help over the top, giving you a rhythm throw versus blitz. Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Comeback Seam from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the sail concept, then come back to Y-Sail once they start cheating a defender into the flat.
