X Dagger out of Shotgun Doubles Offset is a classic dagger concept pass play built to attack both shells with a two level clear out on the boundary. The outside receiver on the left runs a deep vertical seam up the numbers while the slot receiver clears out underneath on a corner route that pushes to the flat, and the inline route sits down on a deep dig sitting behind the seam at roughly 15 yards. On the backside the receiver runs a comeback breaking route to give a quick throw option away from the dagger concept. The HB stays in to check release into the flat as a checkdown, and the primary read progression starts with the deep dig sitting behind the cleared out zone, then works to the seam runner, and finally to the backside comeback if the defense drops deep.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this dictates whether the dig or the seam route will be the first open window. Watch the flat or curl defender at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route clear out too aggressively the dig will sit wide open behind him. User the deep middle defender or a linebacker with lurk instincts to sit on the dig route, this is the primary counter to shut down the main read. Against man coverage, key the cornerback on the backside comeback route, if he plays tight outside leverage the comeback wins immediately on the break. Watch for a blitz off the edge on the dagger side, since the concept relies on a full progression read, a quick pressure package or nano blitz can force the quarterback off his first read before the dig develops.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safety shells before the snap since this play is labeled as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater and the dig sitting behind the cleared out corner route punishes both shells if the corner or flat defender bites on the underneath route.

Use the corner route on the slot receiver as a clear out tool, do not force that throw, its job is to occupy the deep half defender or the flat defender in zone so the dig comes open behind it.

If the defense shows man coverage pre snap, key the backside comeback route as a quick win against a corner playing outside leverage, especially on third and medium.

Sequence this play with Four Verticals or PA Comeback Seam from the same set so defenders start jumping the dig route, then hit them with the vertical shot off the same look.

Against Cover 3, hold the ball a beat longer for the dig to sit in the hole behind the underneath zone defender and in front of the deep third defender rather than forcing it early.
