Angle Smash out of Shotgun Doubles Offset gets its name from the HB running an angle route out of the backfield, sitting the underneath linebacker and creating a natural pick for the flat defender. On the boundary side the outside receiver runs a corner route while the slot underneath runs a flat/out, forming the classic Smash combo to attack the deep quarter and flat defenders. The backside receiver runs a deep in while the tight end or backside slot runs a quick option route, giving you a built in Cover 2 beater on the strong side and a shallow crosser as an outlet. Primary read starts with the angle route out of the backfield against man coverage or blitz, then progresses to the Smash concept (corner over flat) if the linebackers stay disciplined, with the deep in as the backside answer against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker at the snap. If he sprints to the flat or blitzes, the HB angle route will beat him every time and should be your first look. Read the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4) tell you the Smash concept corner route is live against the flat defender in a classic high low conflict. Track the flat defender's leverage on the strong side. If he sinks to cover the corner route, throw the underneath flat/out route for the easy completion. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a single deep safety, expect the deep in route on the backside to be your best answer since the middle of the field is more vacated. Beware disciplined linebackers who sit on angle routes and spy the HB out of the backfield. Against Tampa 2 or Mable coverage looks, be ready to progress fast to the Smash side instead of forcing the angle throw.

Usage Tips

Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is sitting shallow expecting run or screen, the HB angle route out of the backfield will be wide open against man coverage or a blitz look.

Identify the safety shell before the snap. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, key on the Smash concept corner route to attack the flat defender and safety conflict on the strong side.

Use the HB angle route as your check down against pressure since it releases quickly and beats most nano blitzes designed to collapse the pocket.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Slant Flat in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the angle beater, then dial up Four Verticals once you have them jumping the short stuff.

On third and short or third and medium, this is one of your best answers since the angle route creates instant separation against overaggressive linebackers and blitz packages.
