Breakdown

FL Spot out of Shotgun Doubles Offset lines up with the flanker running a corner route from the backside, a pair of receivers on the left running the classic spot combo (flat and dig underneath a deep out), and the slot receiver on the right releasing into a flat route with the TE running a quick hitch or settle route in front of him to hold underneath defenders. The RB stays in to protect against the edge rush shown by the red pass rush arrow, giving the QB a clean pocket to work the Spot side. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender with layered stems: the outside receiver's deep out sits behind the flat route, and the corner route clears out the deep third, so the primary read progression starts with the flat to dig combo on the trips or spot side before working back to the corner route against a rotated single-high shell.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first, if he sinks with the dig route the flat is open, if he jumps the flat the dig sits down behind him for an easy pitch and catch. Watch the deep third or deep half safety alignment before the snap, a rotated single high shell with the corner cheating inside is a green light for the corner route to win one on one. Identify user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone between the hash and the numbers, they will try to jump the dig route so have your check down flat route ready as an escape valve. Recognize man coverage by tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since the spot concept is more vulnerable to man beaters and you should be ready to hot route or check to a different play if you see Cover 1 or Cover 0 pressure looks. Watch the edge rush shown coming off the right side, if the defense brings a nano blitz or overload pressure there, get the ball out quickly to the flat or hitch route before the protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 and other single high shells first since the corner route on the backside is designed to clear the deep defender and open up the underneath spot combo.

Pre-snap, check if the flat defender to the spot side is a linebacker or a slot corner, if it is a linebacker you have a big speed advantage on the flat route.

Hot route the backside flat runner into a deeper drag if you see man coverage across the board, since the spot concept naturally loses some value against tight man leverage.

Use FL Spot on early down and medium distance (2nd and 6 or more) to bait zone defenders into the flat and hit the dig behind them for a chain moving gain.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Spot Dbl Slant from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath combos and full field spot reads, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
