Breakdown

FL Spot out of Shotgun Doubles Offset runs the classic Spot concept to the three-receiver side while the backside X runs a deep dig across the field. At the snap the outside receiver clears vertically before breaking outward on a corner route, the slot runs a quick flat, and the inside receiver settles underneath on the spot route to hold underneath zone defenders. The HB releases into a flat route out of the backfield for a checkdown option while the line slides to protect against the four man rush. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the spot and flat to hold the curl-flat defender while the corner route climbs behind him into the vacated deep third, and the primary read progression starts with the spot route, works to the flat, then hits the deep dig or corner if the coverage bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify single high versus two high safety looks since this concept is built to exploit single high Cover 3 rotations. Watch the curl flat defender at the snap, if he sinks under the spot route the corner route behind him should be open for a big gain. Key the flat defender's depth and reaction to the HB release, aggressive flat defenders jumping the checkdown open up the spot route sitting behind them. If the defense shows man coverage with a deep half safety, target the X receiver's dig route since it crosses the field away from the leverage of man defenders. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle since he can jump both the spot route and the dig if he reads the quarterback's eyes early.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 shells first since the spot to corner combo is designed to stress the curl flat defender and the deep third corner simultaneously.

Use the flat route as your quick hot route answer against blitz looks since it releases fast and gives you a safe outlet if the pocket collapses.

Check the deep dig from the X receiver against man coverage since it works as a crosser that can separate against man defenders trying to stay over the top.

Pair this play with Double Slant Spot or Slant Flat from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick underneath throws and the deeper spot to corner shot.

Best used on second or third and medium since it gives you access to the intermediate corner route and dig as chain moving options if the underneath stuff is covered.
