PA Jet Sweep sells the jet motion fake across the formation before working into a play-action pass with a deep crosser and two clear-out routes off the top of the diagram. The X receiver runs a deep dig breaking back across the middle, the outside yellow route on the left clears out to the boundary sideline, and the far right receiver climbs vertically before bending back across the field, while the blue route underneath is a flat/swing check down for the running back. This is a play-action pass built to attack zone defenses that bite on the jet sweep fake, with the deep dig as the primary read and the underneath flat as the built-in outlet if the defense drops out fast.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: if both safeties are shaded toward the box or crashing down to respect the run, this play-action concept will hit for explosive yardage over the top. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard to defend the jet sweep run fake, the deep dig route will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the vertical route on the right side is a losing rep for the defense, so user the deep safety to rotate over that route immediately. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who sink into throwing lanes instead of biting on the run fake will take away the dig and force a checkdown to the flat. Blitz packages that send extra defenders will get picked apart if the offensive line holds up, since the deep dig and vertical routes create natural picks against man-to-man blitzers.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to follow the motion man, which tells you if they are in man coverage. If the second level defenders bite hard on the run fake, the deep dig from the X receiver will come open in the void behind the linebackers. Hot route the backside clear-out route into a shallow drag if you are facing heavy zone coverage to give yourself an easier underneath conversion target. This play works best on early downs (first or second down) when defenses are more likely to respect the run threat from Doubles Offset personnel. Pair this with actual Jet Sweep runs or RPO Zone Alert Bus earlier in a series so the defense over-commits to run fits, making the play-action fake even more effective on this call.
