Breakdown
Drag Under out of Shotgun Doubles Offset lines up three receivers to the left and one tight end tight to the right, with the running back releasing to the flat. The three left side receivers run a vertical stretch with the outside receiver on a corner route, the middle receiver on a deep out or flag, and the inside slot dragging across the field underneath at linebacker depth. The tight end runs a shallow drag from the right side back across the formation, crossing under the linebackers while the back releases to the flat as a checkdown, and the primary read is the tight end's drag into the shallow crosser with the running back flat route as the built in outlet.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap since that usually signals man coverage underneath, which this drag concept is designed to beat with natural rub routes. If the defense shows two deep safeties with linebackers sitting in short zone drops, expect the underneath crosser to get picked off by a zone defender sinking into the drag lane. User controlled linebackers who spy the middle of the field can jump the tight end's drag route, so be ready to reset to the running back in the flat as your checkdown. Cover 3 with a sky safety and hard flat corners can squeeze both the flat route and the drag, forcing you to rely on the deeper out or corner route from the middle receiver instead. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A gap put pressure on the quarterback before the drag develops, so recognize overload blitz looks pre-snap and be ready for a quick checkdown or throwaway.
Usage Tips
Key on the middle of the field pre-snap because this play thrives against single high safety looks and man coverage where the drag creates natural rub traffic against man defenders.
Use the tight end's drag as your first read and work directly to the running back in the flat if the underneath defenders sink with the crosser.
Against zone shells with heavy underneath drop coverage, hot route the running back to a shallow drag or flat option to stretch the zone horizontally and open a passing lane.
Pair this call with Double Slants or Slant Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath crossers and the deeper drag concept.
Best used on second and medium or third and short since the drag and flat combo gives you a high percentage completion with room to pick up the sticks after the catch.
