PA Comeback Seam runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Doubles Offset, holding linebackers with the run fake before the QB works the pass concept. On the play side you get two seam routes from the inside receivers stacking vertically up the numbers, a comeback route from the outside X breaking back to the sideline near the sticks, and a third seam breaker on the backside running a quick out and up to attack the flat then vertical. The primary read progression starts with the backside comeback for a quick throw against soft corners, then works to the seam routes if the safety bites on the play fake, giving you a true play-action seam beater against zone shells that bring the strong safety up in run support.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard on the run fake, the seam routes will be wide open behind them, so user a linebacker in coverage to sit in the passing lane. Check safety alignment pre-snap: two high safeties who stay deep will squeeze the seam windows, forcing the QB to check down to the comeback route instead. Identify man coverage on the outside X receiver, since aggressive press corners can jump the comeback route for a pick if the QB throws it late. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers, since the play-action fake slows the QB's read progression and makes him vulnerable to fast interior pressure if the line doesn't hold up. Zone shells with a hard flat defender can undercut the backside route combo, so bait the QB into a seam throw by dropping a lurking linebacker into the middle of the field.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the play fake actually holds linebackers and the safety respects the run action.
Pre-snap, identify two high shells versus single high looks: against single high safety rotations the seam routes have more room to work up the middle since the safety has to choose run or pass.
If you see aggressive corners jumping comeback routes, hot route the comeback receiver into a deeper out or fade to counter the jump.
Pair this play with Double Slants or Drag Under from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and the play-action shot, since the pre-snap motion and formation look identical.
Against man coverage, key the seam routes immediately since play-action seams create natural separation from linebackers who bite on the run fake, giving you a big play window before the safety can recover.
