PA Comeback Seam is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Offset that dresses up a four man route concept with a run fake to hold the linebackers. The two inside receivers push vertical seams up the middle to stress the safeties and split the zone, while the boundary outside receiver runs a comeback back to the sideline and the backside receiver runs a deep out breaking comeback route as well. This is primarily a zone beater since the seams occupy the middle of the field and the comebacks sit down in front of the corners once they bail on their landmarks, and the primary read progression starts with the near side seam route before working to the comeback route on the same side if the safety jumps the seam.

Defensive Reads

Key the safety depth before the snap since two high shells invite the seam throw while single high shells push you to the comeback route sooner Watch the flow of the linebackers after the run fake, if they stay home and do not bite the seam window shrinks and you need to reset to the comeback Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field hunting the seam, a lurking linebacker or robber safety is the biggest threat to this concept Look for cornerbacks playing off coverage since that alignment sets up the comeback route perfectly, tight press corners can jump the comeback and take it away Beware of blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play action fake and full route tree take time to develop and can get the quarterback hit before routes mature

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball on the play action mesh point so linebackers step up before the seams break vertical

Check for two high safeties pre snap since split safety looks let the seams occupy the middle while the comebacks work underneath the corners

Hot route the backside comeback into a deeper comeback or a fade if you see a single high safety rotating to that side

Use this on early down and medium distance situations like second and six or third and short since the play action fake needs linebackers respecting the run
