Defensive Reads
Watch for flat zone defenders (corners or OLBs) cheating up on the jet motion pre-snap, which signals they will bite on the fake and open up the sideline route. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a flat defender responsible for the short outside zone, since this play is designed to exploit that exact assignment. Key the linebackers post-snap: if they flow hard toward the jet motion instead of staying square, the throwing lane to the sideline opens immediately. Recognize aggressive man coverage or defenses that stay disciplined on motion, since these shut down the single route concept with no second read to fall back on. Look for a lurking safety or nickel defender sinking into the flat area after the snap, as a user-controlled defender jumping this route can turn it into a turnover.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in run-heavy personnel counts to sell the jet sweep fake and freeze linebackers who are keying run first.
Check the flat defender pre-snap: if the corner or OLB is sitting soft in a zone shell, the sideline route will have room to work after the catch.
Pair this with actual Jet Sweep or PA Jet Sweep from the same set earlier in a drive so the defense over-commits to the jet motion fake, then punish them with this play.
Snap the ball quickly after motion to catch defenses in base zone coverages before they can rotate a safety down to help on the flat.
Avoid this call against aggressive man coverage teams that stay home on motion, since the single route concept lacks a second read if the flat is jumped.
