Buck Sweep out of Shotgun Doubles Offset is a gap-scheme run play built around lead blockers pulling toward the playside edge. The diagram shows the offensive line combo blocking down at the point of attack while the backfield action, marked by the red arrow, has the ball carrier attacking outside width behind the pulling guard. This is a run play designed to beat gap-shooting fronts and overaggressive edge defenders by getting numbers to the perimeter before the defense can flow, with the primary read being the pulling blocker's kick out on the first threat off the edge.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends squeezing hard inside, that is your cue the sweep will bounce clean if your kick out block connects. Identify Mike linebacker alignment before the snap, a linebacker stacked too far inside will not have the leverage to beat your puller to the edge. Post snap, key the flow of the second level defenders, if they diagnose run late and flow slow you have a numbers edge outside. This play struggles against fast flow linebackers and edge defenders trained to stay home on outside run keys, especially in odd fronts with extra edge speed. User controlled defenders that spy the pulling guard can blow this up early, so if you see a defender crash the puller pre-snap consider checking to an inside run instead.
Usage Tips
Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to guarantee a numbers advantage at the point of attack.
Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the alley defender is more likely to be a linebacker you can outrun to the corner.
Use your hot route or user control on the fullback or pulling guard to adjust the kick out block if you see a hard edge crash from the defensive end pre-snap.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so defenses cannot key on backfield flow and start jumping the pulling guard.
Best called on early downs or short yardage when you need to force linebackers to respect outside gap speed before dialing up play action shots off the same look.
