The primary read progression starts with the stick route running the flat/hitch combo on the left side, then works to the boundary receiver on the right if the stick is taken away, giving the quarterback a quick, high percentage throw against both man and zone shells.

Defensive Reads

Check the depth of the underneath linebackers pre snap, since shallow zone drops signal the stick route will be covered and you should progress quickly to the right side out route. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the stick concept, as this is the primary threat that shuts down the quick game and forces a checkdown or scramble. Identify press man coverage on the outside receiver running the vertical clear route, since beating the jam early opens up easier reads underneath for the rest of the concept. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the stick route, so read the flat defender's positioning before committing to that throw. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will speed up the clock, so prioritize the quick stick or the outside route immediately rather than holding the ball for a deeper progression.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short or medium distance situations where the stick route can settle in front of underneath defenders for an easy conversion.

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing zone or man by checking linebacker depth and cornerback alignment, since the stick sits down against zone but you may need to hot route it to a speed out against tight man coverage.

If the corner over the outside receiver on the left is playing press man, consider hot routing that vertical route to a quick slant to beat the jam.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Dagger from the same formation to keep defenses honest against the quick game, forcing them to respect both the short stick throw and the deep shot off similar pre snap looks.

Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the boundary out route on the right since safeties will often sink deep and leave the flat exposed underneath.
