Y Stick from Pistol Wing Slot lines up with two receivers stacked to the left and a single wide receiver to the right, running a classic three-level stick concept combined with a deep out. To the left the outside receiver breaks flat toward the sideline while the inside receiver sits down on a quick stick route creating an inside-out read against the flat defender. To the right the lone receiver runs a deep out that clears the flat and stretches the cornerback, giving the quarterback a fast, high-percentage progression: stick route first, flat route second, deep out on the backside as the alert against man coverage or blitz looks.
Pre snap identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or one high, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells are vulnerable to the stick route sitting in the underneath window Watch the flat defender at the snap: if he widens with the flat route the stick route sits open behind him for an easy completion Against Cover 3 the corner playing the deep out on the backside is the key defender, if he sinks too deep the underneath curl to flat combo opens up on the near side Man coverage with underneath help gets exposed by the deep out route clearing the sideline, but watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the stick window to jump the route Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the toughest matchup for this play since the quick game window closes fast, so identify blitz pre snap by linebacker depth and be ready to hot route the outlet or check the protection
Use this against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3 since the stick and flat combo forces the underneath defender to pick one, giving you the other for free
Check the flat defender pre snap: if he sits deep or shows blitz, hot route the flat man to a quick out or slide the stick route into a shallow drag for an easy conversion
On third and short or third and medium this is a premier stick concept play, since the stick route settles right at the sticks and gives a rhythm throw before pressure arrives
Against man coverage look immediately to the backside deep out, since it clears out the underneath defenders and creates separation on the break
Pair this with Four Verticals or Dagger from the same Wing Slot set to keep the defense honest, since the stick concept punishes zone drops while the vertical shots punish aggressive man coverage
