Breakdown

PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of the Pistol Wing Slot 12 personnel set that pulls the QB left off the run fake to sell the boot before he throws. The route concept shows a deep vertical bender from the fullback/H-back area (red route) climbing straight downfield off the play fake, a deep corner route breaking outside from the boundary receiver, and an intermediate crosser sitting down in the flat area at the sticks. Blocking is a standard boot slide protection with the frontside offensive line sliding left to protect the rollout lane while the backside is left unprotected, so the primary read progression starts with the sitting crosser/flat route underneath, then works to the deep bender crossing the middle, and finally to the corner route if the pocket edge holds up.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the backside contain defender crashing down on the play fake, since that opens a lane for a QB scramble if all routes are covered. Cover 3 zone defenses with a hard-flowing linebacker to the play side flat will bracket the sitting crosser, so look to reset to the deep bender crossing back to the opposite hash. Man coverage on the outside with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep corner route, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks. If the user controls a linebacker and sits in a lurk spot near the sticks, that defender can jump the underneath crosser, so be ready to climb the ladder to the deep route immediately. Fast defensive ends or edge rushers who ignore the run fake and immediately widen to contain will collapse the boot pocket quickly, so time your throw before the rollout fully develops.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short to medium) when you have already established the run game with HB Power O or HB Slam so the linebackers bite on the play fake.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. If you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the underneath sitting route because the deep shots will be capped.

If the defense shows single high or the corner is playing aggressive man on the outside receiver, take a shot on the deep corner route since the boot action creates natural separation on the rollout.

Hot route the crosser into a deeper drag if you are getting quick pressure off the backside edge, since the offensive line does not protect that side on the boot.
