This play beats soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the flat defender is late getting width, and it beats light boxes where linebackers respect the run fake. Man coverage with a hard-corner playing bump and run technique on the slot receiver shuts down the bubble portion, forcing the offense into the shallow crosser or the handoff. User-controlled defenders who stay disciplined and shuffle out to the flat instead of biting on the run fake, or who spy the crossing route, take away both the screen and the underneath option, leaving only the run as a real threat.
Usage Tips
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender and the second level defender the RPO key line points to before the snap, since their depth determines whether you hand off or throw the bubble.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage, where defenses are more likely to sit in base zone shells and light boxes that get exploited by the run-pass conflict.
If the defense shows a hard crash toward the run look with the flat defender squeezing down, immediately pull and throw the bubble screen before the corner can react.
