Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top is a bad matchup for the defense since the route stresses a defender in space after the run fake disrupts his leverage. Disciplined edge defenders who stay home on the boot and do not bite on the fake can blow up the play by containing the QB rollout. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB or sitting in the throwing lane, since that lurk can jump the breaking route if the fake does not sell.

Call this on early downs like first or second and short when defenses are keyed on stopping the run out of heavy personnel groupings.
Watch the linebackers and safeties pre-snap: if they are crashing hard on jet motion or stacking the box, this play is primed to hit over the top.
Use the jet motion to bait linebackers into flowing wrong, then let the QB roll out and deliver to the breaking route before the edge defender can recover.
