Dagger out of Pistol Wing Slot 12 personnel lines up two receivers to the boundary side with a deep dig from the inside slot and a corner/vertical clear-out from the outside receiver, while the playside TE runs a shallow drag underneath and the backside receiver runs a corner route to hold the deep half. The vertical route from the outside receiver clears out the deep coverage so the inside receiver can settle into the void on the deep dig, making this a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater. Primary progression starts with the deep dig against the middle of the field, works to the corner route on the backside as a hole shot vs single high, and checks down to the drag underneath if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, since Cover 2 shells are vulnerable to the dig settling in the seam between the corner and safety zones. Key on the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks too deep or bites on the drag, the dig route will be wide open behind him. Against single high looks like Cover 3, respect the corner route as the primary hole shot since it attacks the seam vacated by the rotating safety. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receiver, aggressive press man coverage can disrupt the vertical clear-out and delay the timing of the whole concept. Man coverage with a linebacker on the TE drag is a green light to check down quickly, since athletic mismatches favor the offense in that matchup.
Usage Tips
Identify the safety shell before the snap, this play thrives against two high safeties who bite on the vertical clear-out and against single high defenders who overcommit to the corner route. Use the vertical route as a decoy to occupy the deep defenders, then hit the dig route as your first read since it settles into the vacated middle zone. Best called on second and long or third and medium when you need a chunk gain over the middle against zone-heavy defenses. Hot route the drag underneath into a quicker option against man coverage or if you sense pressure, since it clears out fast and gives you a safety valve. Pair this with Y Stick or Four Verticals from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick underneath throws and deep shots off similar formation looks.
