PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action bootleg out of the Pistol Wing Slot formation that sells a center run fake before the quarterback rolls to the right edge. The diagram shows two vertical seam routes from the outside receivers breaking upfield after an initial hitch step, a crossing route from the inside slot that works flat across the formation into the vacated area, and a flat route from the backfield releasing to the right sideline. The design stresses zone defenders horizontally with the flat and crosser while the two verticals hold the safeties, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow cross underneath, moves to the flat route as the outlet if the boot is contained, and comes back to the vertical routes on the play side if the safety bites on the run fake.
Key the middle linebacker and weak side backer immediately after the snap. If they step up hard on the center fake, the crosser and flat will be wide open underneath. Watch for a scrape exchange from the play side defensive end or outside linebacker, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home can blow up the naked bootleg and force an early checkdown or sack. Identify Cover 3 versus Cover 4 shells pre-snap. Cover 3 leaves a soft spot in the flat that this play attacks well, while Cover 4 with matching safeties can carry the verticals and squeeze the crosser. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since smart defenders will spy that route knowing it is the first read. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with the backside safety rotating down, expect pressure to reach the quarterback quickly on the boot, so be ready to throw hot to the flat route as soon as the ball is snapped.
Run this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits, since the center fake needs linebackers to step up for the play to hit.
Check safety depth pre-snap. If both safeties are shaded deep at 10-plus yards, the fake will not hold long enough, so lean on the flat and crosser instead of the verticals.
Hot route the backside vertical into a quick out or drag if you diagnose Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, since the naked side can get exposed to a fast scrape exchange.
Pair this play with HB Power O and Strong Power earlier in a drive so the center fake actually threatens the defense, then dial up PA Ctr Waggle once linebackers start keying run flow.
Combine with PA Boot Lt in your play-calling script to attack both edges off similar run action, forcing the defense to respect boot action to either side and slowing down edge defender contain rushes.
