Defensive Reads

Watch the backside defensive end or outside linebacker to see if he stays home to play the QB or crashes down on the HB, since his discipline determines whether the give or the keep is the better decision. Look for defenses that spread out with a 4-3 under front and a hard crashing DE, since that alignment is prone to getting read and beaten on the keeper. Man coverage shells with linebackers sitting in the box tend to struggle against this play because the second level cannot fast flow to the mesh point without opening a cutback lane. Zone heavy fronts with linebackers reading the mesh point and squeezing gaps can shut this down if they stay disciplined and do not overreact to the HB fake. Be aware of user controlled defenders spying the QB from depth, since a disciplined spy will erase the keep option and force a tough give read on every snap.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive end or outside linebacker on the play side before the snap to see if he is crashing hard or sitting to play both the QB and HB. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest and set up explosive plays later in the series. If the defense shows a heavy overload blitz to the play side, consider audibling to HB Slam or HB Dive from this same formation to hit a quick gap before the edge defender can react. Pair this with Orbit PA Boot Lt or PA Boot Lt later in a drive since the play action look off a similar backfield action can freeze defenders who bit on the read option keeper. Against aggressive user defenders flying upfield off the edge, pull the ball more often since the vacated edge creates a natural running lane for the QB.
