HB Power G out of Pistol Wing Slot is a gap scheme run play built around a lead blocker pulling from the backside guard to seal the point of attack. The offensive line down blocks toward the play side while the guard wraps around to lead through the hole, giving the HB a designated crease with a lead blocker in space. This is a pure run play with no play-action attachment, so the primary read progression starts with the pulling guard's block, then bounces outside if the alley is clogged by an unblocked defender or overpursuing linebacker.
Watch for a mike linebacker sitting tight to the line pre-snap since a downhill blitz off the edge can beat the pulling guard before the lead block develops. Check safety depth before the snap, a safety cheating into the box signals run support and can clog the intended lane, forcing you to bounce the run outside. Overloaded fronts with extra defenders stacked to the play side kill this concept, audible to the backside or switch to a zone run if you see this alignment. Post-snap, track the pulling guard's kick out block, if the edge defender squeezes down and forces the guard to redirect, the HB needs to cut it back against the grain. Defenses that play light boxes with two high safeties and stay honest against play-action are the most vulnerable to Power G since they cannot get an extra body downhill in time.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the front to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Identify if the defense has crept a linebacker into the A or B gap since Power G loses value against a stacked interior with a downhill mike ready to shoot the gap.
Take manual control of the HB immediately after the handoff so you can read the pulling guard's block and decide whether to press through the hole or bounce it outside.
Pair this with HB Slam or HB Dive out of the same personnel to keep the defense guessing between gap and inside zone concepts, then mix in HB Counter for misdirection once the defense starts flowing hard to Power G's side.
Best called on early downs or short yardage and goal line situations where you want a physical downhill run rather than a finesse outside track.
