Breakdown

HB Power O out of the Pistol Wing Slot 12 personnel is a gap scheme run play built around a pulling guard leading the hole. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down to the play side with the backside guard pulling to kick out the first defender past the point of attack, while the HB takes a slight lead step before pressing downhill off his pulling lineman. Both TEs and the wing align to the play side to seal the edge and provide a wall for the runner to work behind, making this a power run designed to overwhelm the point of attack rather than a man or zone beater through the air. The primary read is the play side double team and pulling guard: press the line of scrimmage, key the kick out block, and cut off the puller's hip into the alley.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the run and may force you to check to a pass. Identify the play side end and outside linebacker alignment before the snap, since a wide 9 technique or crashing edge defender can blow up the kick out block from the pulling guard. Post-snap, key the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, if he flows too fast to the play side he opens a cutback lane behind the puller. Look for user-controlled defenders shooting the play side A or B gap immediately after the snap, which usually means a run blitz or gap exchange designed to beat the double team before the puller arrives. Against zone blitz or contain schemes, the puller may not have a clean angle, so be ready to check to a bounce path or abandon the play if the edge is unblocked.

Usage Tips

Use this play when you see light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the double team and pulling guard need numbers advantage to create movement. Bait aggressive defenses by running HB Slam or HB Dive first to sell inside gap runs, then hit Power O to punish overcommitted linebackers flowing hard to the first run look. Manually control the HB pre-snap read the puller's block before committing to a lane, and be willing to bounce it outside if the backside linebacker fills the hole quickly. This play shines on short yardage and second or third and short situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts. Pair it with PA Power O and Strong Power in the same play call sequence to keep run fits honest and set up explosive play-action shots off the same look.
