Hitch Corners out of Pistol Wing Slot 12 personnel shows a two-man route combo on the field side paired with a single receiver route to the backside. The outside receiver runs a corner route while the inline tight end releases underneath into a quick hitch, creating a natural high low stretch on the flat and deep outside corner defenders. The backside X receiver runs a corner route as well, giving the quarterback a deep half field read against zone coverage or a leverage based win against man. This is primarily a zone beater that attacks the flat to deep quarter conflict, with the primary read starting on the hitch to corner combo and progressing backside if the boundary corner route is covered.

Defensive Reads

Check the corner and safety depth before the snap, a corner playing tight to the line with no safety help over the top is a green light for the corner route to win. Watch the flat defender or underneath zone defender at the snap, if he widens with the hitch route the corner behind him is wide open in the void. This concept struggles against a hard two deep shell like Cover 2 or Cover 4 where safeties can rob the corner routes, so be ready to check down to the hitch underneath. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the tight end hitch can bait a quick throw, so scan for late rotation before committing to the underneath read. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage on the outside can be exposed by the corner routes if the quarterback holds the ball long enough for the break, but a fast interior blitz negates this since it is a lower protection concept.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing two high or single high safety alignment since the corner routes need a soft or bailing corner to work underneath them.

Start your read on the tight end hitch, if the underneath defender sits on the hitch throw the corner route behind him for the explosive gain.

Use this concept on second and medium or third and short to medium since the hitch gives a quick underneath answer if the corners are covered.

Pair this play with Y Stick or PA Slot Cross in the same set to keep defenders honest, since both concepts attack similar horizontal stretch reads and force linebackers to widen out of the box.

Against man coverage look to the backside corner route first, since a defender without safety help over the top can be beaten on the sideline break if you throw with anticipation.
