Hitch Corners out of Pistol Wing Slot lines up two receivers to the boundary side and a bunched TE/WR look to the field side. The outside receiver on the near side runs a corner route up the numbers while the inside receiver breaks off a quick hitch underneath, and on the backside a receiver runs a vertical corner route while the tight end sits down on a shallow hitch. This is a man beater built off high low leverage: the primary read is the field side corner route against off man or split safety coverage, working down to the underneath hitch if the corner is capped, with the backside corner and hitch combo serving as a changeup read versus rolled coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch cornerback alignment before the snap: press corners with no safety help over the top get beat easily by the corner routes breaking outside. Identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the flat defender responsible for the hitch zone often leaves the corner route matched up on a linebacker or slot corner. Key the deep safeties post snap: if they stay flat footed reading run action, the corner routes will separate quickly in the void behind them. Cover 2 corner and flat combos with a hard squeeze on the hitch can force a checkdown, so be ready to progress to the backside hitch if the flat defender jumps the corner route. Beware disguised Cover 4 rotations where a safety walks down late, since that can undercut the corner route and turn it into a pick six opportunity for the defense.
Usage Tips
Attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells by targeting the corner routes before the safety can rotate over the top since both corners break outside the numbers at a similar depth.
Use the hitch routes as your hot route answer versus press man or blitz looks, since they get open fast and give you a built in check down against pressure.
Motion the wing TE across formation pre-snap to confirm man coverage if a defender follows across the formation.
Pair this play with Y Stick or Dagger in the same set to keep defenders honest on shallow crossers before hitting them with the corner shots later in a series.
Best called on second or third and medium since the hitch routes convert quickly while the corners stretch the field for chunk gains.
