Breakdown

Strong Power is a downhill gap run out of the Pistol Wing Slot 12 personnel set, showing two wide receivers split out with no routes run since this is a designated run play. The offensive line and TE combo block down to the strong side while the fullback or extra blocker (shown by the red arrow) kicks out or leads through the hole to seal the point of attack. This is a power run concept, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the ball carrier is to press the hole off the double team and read the kickout block to decide whether to bend it inside or bounce outside.

Defensive Reads

Look for the strong side linebacker's alignment pre-snap since Strong Power attacks gaps to that side and a stacked box there signals the defense is sitting on the run. Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side edge because if they are crashing hard down inside, this play can bounce outside for a big gain. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line since a well timed A gap or B gap blitz can blow up the double team before the kickout block sets. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated deep usually means light boxes, which favors this run heavily. Against a stacked 46 front or heavy blitz packages with extra defenders in the box, this play loses its advantage and should be checked to a passing concept.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first and ten or short yardage third down situations where defenses are likely to load the box with a base front. Check the defensive line spacing pre-snap and if you see a heavy 4 or 5 man front, be ready to check into a zone run or bubble RPO instead since Strong Power needs numbers advantage at the point of attack. Pair this with HB Slam or HB Dive earlier in a drive to set up defenders keying on quick inside runs, then hit Strong Power later once linebackers start flowing faster. Use the fullback or lead blocker's path as your visual key and stay patient behind the double team block before making your cut. Mix in PA Power O or PA Ctr Waggle from this same formation to keep the defense honest on the strong side action.
