HB Counter out of Pistol Wing Slot is a pure gap scheme run play designed to pull blockers across the formation and create a misdirection lane for the HB. The diagram shows the offensive line and both TEs blocking down at the point of attack while the two outside receivers run vertical routes to occupy corners and clear the alley. The HB takes a counter step away from the play call before following his pulling linemen through the designed gap, with the primary read being to press the hole and cut off the puller's block once the play side gap opens.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and shoulder lean before the snap, if they are stacked tight and squared to the counter side they are likely reading the pull and will fill fast. Identify safety rotation immediately after the snap, a single high safety crashing downhill signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 run support that can beat this play if your guards get beat to the point of attack. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the counter step are the biggest threat, so if you see the Mike linebacker or a safety diagnosing the counter and squeezing the backside gap, bail out of the run pre-snap with an audible. This play struggles against odd fronts with a nose tackle in a true zero technique since he can disrupt the guard's pull path immediately. Overload blitzes or nano blitz packages aimed at the play side gap will blow this up before the puller arrives, so recognize stacked defensive ends or blitzing corners at the line and get out of the run call.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy Wing Slot concepts like Dagger and Four Verticals. Check the box count pre-snap and only trust the counter action if you have five or fewer defenders in the box, since an overloaded front will beat your pulling linemen to the hole. Use the outside vertical routes as a pre-snap indicator, if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 3 with man corners bailing at the snap, the counter lane usually stays clean because those corners are not sitting in the run fit. Pair this with HB Power O and Strong Power in the same drive to condition the defense to expect gap runs, then hit them with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot Lt off the same backfield action once linebackers start crashing hard on the counter step. Manually control your lead blocker with the pulling lineman and use the hit stick or truck through the first arriving linebacker to maximize yards after contact.
