This is a pure run play with no route combos or play-action element, so the primary read progression is simply pressing the mesh point and reading the initial gap flow from the defensive line, bouncing outside only if the interior is fully clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders near the line, this is the primary counter to HB Dive since there is no lead blocker to handle an extra man. Key the mike linebacker's depth and gap alignment pre-snap, a linebacker sitting tight in the A gap can blow up the dive before it develops. Look for defensive tackles crashing hard down inside on the snap, aggressive gap shooters can beat the interior blocking before the back reaches the hole. If the defense shows man coverage on the perimeter with light second level run support, this is a green light situation since the dive only needs the front five to win their blocks. User controlled defenders spying the mesh point or sitting the mike linebacker at the line will consistently shut this play down, so avoid calling it into a defense that has already sniffed out interior runs.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the defensive tackles and mike linebacker depth, if they are shaded wide or the mike is not downhill ready, this play hits fast before flow can react.

Avoid calling this against heavy blitz looks with extra defenders stacked in the box, since there is no pulling protection to account for an unblocked extra rusher.
