This is a classic zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep zones, and the primary read progression starts with the inside seam or post-breaking route working the safety, then works outside to the numbers route based on which safety commits.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since Cover 3 leaves a soft spot in the deep middle that this concept is built to exploit. Watch the corners at the snap, if they bail into deep zone drops instead of pressing, that confirms zone coverage and you should trust the vertical stems. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or nickel defender for a user lurk sitting in the passing lane of the inside seam routes, since that is the most common way to bait a turnover on this concept. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for the defense here, so if you see press man alignment pre-snap, expect the seam to win immediately. Watch for disguised blitzes since this play only has backfield protection, a well timed blitz through a vacated seam lane can beat the protection before routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties split evenly you are looking at Cover 2 or Cover 4 and should target the seams between the numbers and the hashes.

Use the hot route to slide the inside receiver into the honey hole against Cover 3 if the free safety cheats to one side.

This play thrives on third and long or in two minute drill situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone coverage to prevent big plays underneath.

Pair this call with Y Stick or PA Slide from the same set to keep defenses honest against the shorter zone beaters before hitting them deep with verts.

If the user controls a deep defender and sinks into the middle seam, work your eyes to the boundary numbers route since it removes that defender from the throwing lane.
