HB Stretch out of Pistol Wing Slot is an outside zone run play with 12 personnel on the field, giving the offense two tight ends to seal the edge. The offensive line flows laterally in unison toward the play side, stretching the defensive front horizontally to create a cutback lane, while the HB takes a lateral track from the pistol alignment before pressing the line of scrimmage. This is a zone run designed to attack aggressive fronts, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside cutback lane first, then bend it back inside if the edge defender or overhang crashes down too hard.
Defensive Reads
Read the defensive ends and outside linebackers pre-snap to see if they are crashing hard on zone flow, which opens the cutback lane this play is designed to hit. Watch for a heavy box count with both safeties near the line, since that signals run support and forces the ball carrier to find the backside cut immediately. Identify if the defense is in a shaded 4-3 over or under front, since fast flowing linebackers can be exploited by the natural backside cutback lane. Beware of gap-sound defenses that stay disciplined in their zone run fits since disciplined edge defenders and a strong cutback defender can eliminate the cutback entirely. Look for blitzing linebackers off the edge pre-snap since a nano blitz timed to the snap can beat the zone blocking scheme before the tight ends set their edge blocks.
Usage Tips
Attack fronts that are flowing hard playside since the entire zone scheme is built to create a natural cutback if defenders overpursue.
Use the extra tight end in 12 personnel to identify if the defense is playing base run support or subbing out for a nickel look, then decide whether to run at the strength or away from it.
Combine this play with HB Slam and HB Power O in the same set so defenses cannot sit on outside zone tendencies, keeping linebackers honest on run fits.
On early downs, call HB Stretch to set up PA Boot Lt or PA Ctr Waggle later in the drive since the run action sells the same lateral flow the defense will key on.
Manually control the HB after the handoff and press the line hard before committing to a cutback, since patience is critical against teams that flow hard laterally.
