HB Power O is a downhill gap scheme run out of I Form Tight 22 personnel, showing the FB and HB stacked behind the QB with a TE and extra blocker on the line to create double tight end power blocking. The backside guard pulls to lead through the hole while the FB kicks out the edge defender, giving the HB a clean lane off tackle to the play side. This is a pure run play with no route concept, designed to win on gap integrity and double teams rather than reads against man or zone coverage. Primary progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the FB kickout block, and cut off the pulling guard's path.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and alignment pre-snap, stacked or crashing linebackers signal they are keying run and will flow hard to the play side gap. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under or 3-4 look, as extra defensive linemen on the play side can clog the pulling guard's lane. Post-snap, key the edge defender the FB is assigned to kick out, if he squeezes down and holds his ground the play gets blown up at the line. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole or lurking behind the line, since a smart defender reading pull blocking can beat this play before the double team develops. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses and disciplined edge players who stay square, but it gashes teams that overpursue or bring extra run blitzers from depth.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest before dialing up play action shots. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense stacks 8 in the box or shows a run blitz look, consider audibling to HB Toss or PA Ctr Shot to punish overpursuit. Use manual control on the FB to ensure he seals the edge defender rather than letting the AI whiff on the kickout block. Sequence this play early in a series then come back with PA Power O off the same look to freeze linebackers who bit hard on the initial run action. Against aggressive defensive lines that shoot gaps, consider a slight cut back since the backside guard's pull can create a natural cutback lane if the frontside gets jammed.
