Flea Flicker out of I Form Tight (22 personnel) is a designed misdirection play-action shot play that disguises itself as a run first. The HB takes the handoff, sells the run action, then pitches the ball back to the QB who has rolled or reset in the pocket while the offensive line initially shows run blocking before transitioning to pass protection. This is a deep shot play built to beat aggressive run defense and man coverage that bites on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the deep outside receiver on a vertical shot to the intermediate crosser or seam route if the defense holds up over the top.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker and strong safety immediately after the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake without reading the pitch back to the QB the deep route will come open behind them. Watch for defenders assigned to spy or contain, disciplined edge defenders who stay home on the flicker action will collapse the pocket before the deep routes develop. Identify man coverage on the outside receivers pre-snap through cornerback alignment, tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell for this shot play to hit. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties still in position after the fake, since these coverages take away the vertical shot and force a checkdown into a loaded box. Recognize blitz packages or defensive line stunts designed to beat play-action, since the extra time needed to sell the fake and reset makes this play highly vulnerable to fast interior pressure and nano blitzes.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense has shown consistent respect for your HB Toss, HB Power O, or HB Counter looks earlier in the drive so linebackers and safeties are primed to crash on run action.

Use it on second and short or first and ten in normal down and distance situations where defenses expect run out of 22 personnel and I Form sets.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or a stacked box, both indicate the defense is selling out against the run and will bite on the fake, making this the ideal window to pull the trigger.

Avoid this call against two high safety shells or defenses showing Cover 4 or Cover 2, since the extra deep defender eliminates the explosive play upside and the delayed pass setup leaves the QB exposed to a fast pass rush.

Sequence this play after running HB Lead Toss, HB Power O, or FB Dive earlier in the game to condition linebackers to trigger downhill, then dial up Flea Flicker to hit the coverage bust over the top.
