FB Fake HB Toss is a play-action fake built off the HB Toss look out of I Form Tight, designed to freeze linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake to the offensive left. The diagram shows the offensive line holding to sell run blocking while the fullback and halfback carry out the toss fake, with a single receiver running a vertical route up the numbers on the right side. The primary read is that vertical shot off the play-action fake, targeting a defender who steps up on the run action before the ball ever leaves the backfield.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is stacked in the box expecting run, since that is exactly when this play-action shot beats them. Watch the strong safety and outside linebacker on the play side, if they crash down on the toss fake instead of staying disciplined in their pass drop, the vertical route wins over the top. Look for a single high safety shell (Cover 1 or Cover 3) rather than two high, because two safety shells take away the deep shot and force you into a checkdown with no other route showing on the diagram. Post-snap, track whether the cornerback on the vertical route opens his hips to run with it or bites on the run fake, a corner biting on the fake is the tell that this play just hit a home run. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the fake before it fully develops, so know your protection is limited since this design leans on deception rather than max protect blocking.
Run this out of a normal run down and distance (early down, 2 to 6 yards to go) so linebackers and safeties respect the toss fake based on tendency. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box or an 8 man front, this is a green light to fire the vertical route immediately off the fake. Sequence this play after you have already established HB Toss and HB Stretch a few times in the drive so the defense keys run and bites harder on the fake. Use hot routes to adjust the vertical route into a comeback or post if you diagnose a corner playing off coverage with no safety help over the top. Avoid calling this against defenses that are clearly playing pass shells or showing two high safeties pre-snap, since the toss fake will not manipulate anyone.
