Breakdown

PA TE Corner is a play-action shot play out of the I Form Tight 22 personnel set that sells run action to the HB before attacking the defense vertically. Off the fake, the TE releases from the line and breaks into a corner route toward the sideline, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear space and hold the safety, and the backside receiver works a drag/crossing route underneath for a checkdown against pressure. The primary read is the TE corner route first since play-action freezes linebackers and opens the intermediate to deep outside void, with the deep vertical as a shot alert and the underneath drag as the answer versus a hard blitz or when the corner window is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the TE corner route exploits the flat to deep outside seam vacated by a rotating safety. Watch linebacker depth and alignment, if they are stacked tight to the box expecting run action, the play-action freeze on this concept will hold them long enough for the corner route to sit open. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl to flat zone defender since they are responsible for driving on the TE corner route in zone coverage, a late or lazy drop from that defender means an easy completion. Beware Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since the corner route runs directly into the deep half defender and gets contested or picked off if thrown late. If the defense shows a heavy blitz with man coverage behind it, look immediately to the backside drag as your hot route answer since the TE corner takes too long to develop against pressure.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium to keep the defense honest against your HB run plays like HB Power O and HB Stretch out of this same I Form Tight set. Check the box count and safety depth before the snap, a single high safety or two safeties creeping down into run support signals a great window for the TE corner route. Use hot routes to convert the backside drag into a deeper dig or spot route if you diagnose zone coverage, since the underneath option is your quick answer against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 rotations. Sell the play fake fully by letting the animation play out, then work your eyes from the TE corner to the vertical shot route if the safety jumps the corner. Pair this with HB Toss and HB Counter earlier in a drive so linebackers start cheating downhill, making the play-action freeze more effective when you call PA TE Corner later.
