Key the flat defender at the snap: if he sinks with the corner route or widens too far, the spot route sitting inside will be wide open for an easy completion. Watch for a user linebacker sitting in the hook to flat zone as a lurk threat, since he can jump the spot route if you telegraph the throw too early. Against man coverage looks, the corner routes on both outside receivers become the real threats since they attack off the top of press or tight man technique, so widen your protection read to those verticals if you see man match shells. Beware of Cover 3 sky or buzz variations with a fast-flowing safety, since that extra underneath defender can take away both the flat and spot routes and force you to hold the ball longer than the pocket allows.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short when you expect Cover 3 zone drops from the defense.

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man or zone; if you see two deep safeties rotate to single high at the snap, that confirms Cover 3 and this play is designed to punish it.

Hot route the backside vertical into a deep in or dig if you are facing zone with a robber lurking underneath, since that route is otherwise just a clear-out.

Combine this with Z Slant and Mesh from the same set to attack different levels of the same coverage look, keeping linebackers honest against both quick game and intermediate crossers.

Pair with PA Boot or PA Sprint HB Flat as a play-action complement once the defense starts sitting on the spot underneath, since your run action can hold the flat defender for the corner route behind him.
