95 Mike is a power run play out of the I Form Tight 22 personnel set, showing a fullback and halfback stacked behind the QB under center with two tight ends on the line. The red assignment shows the fullback leading through the hole with the halfback taking the handoff and following the FB's block, an isolation blocking scheme designed to let the fullback isolate and take on the first linebacker to fill the alley. This is a run play built to attack the interior gaps, with the primary read being the fullback's lead block: the ball carrier keys the FB into the hole and cuts off his block depending on how the linebacker reacts.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count defenders in the box and check safety depth, since two safeties deep with a light box is the ideal shell to attack with 95 Mike. Identify the Mike linebacker's alignment: if he is stacked directly over the fullback's path, he is coached to take on the lead block and clog the hole. Watch for a run blitz or crashing defensive end, since a fast trigger from the edge can blow up the fullback's angle before he reaches the second level. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill immediately after the snap, which signals the defense is keying run and may leave zone beaters or play-action open on the next call. Heavy fronts with a 3-4 look or extra linebackers on the field are the toughest matchup for this play, since it removes the numbers advantage the iso block relies on.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action shots later in the set like PA Ctr Shot or PA Power O. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more in the box, this play is risky without a lead blocker advantage, so consider audibling to HB Toss or HB Stretch to get outside instead. Watch linebacker depth before the snap; if they are sitting tight to the line expecting run, user the fullback manually to seal the most aggressive defender and create a clean crease. Pair this with FB Dive and HB Iso in the same drive to condition the defense into keying the fullback, then hit them with FB Fake HB Toss or PA Boot off the same look. Use motion or shifts pre-snap to identify if the defense is base 4-3 or nickel, since a lighter box makes this a much more efficient gap shot.
