Goal Line Fade out of I Form Tight 22 personnel sends both outside receivers vertical on fade routes toward the sideline, giving the quarterback a true jump ball on either side of the field. The X receiver on the right runs a quick out and up while the tight end on the left releases into a fade as well, and the FB checks down into the flat off a delayed release for a safety valve. The HB stays in as protection, picking up any run blitz or extra rusher up front. This is a man beater built for one on one situps near the goal line, with the primary read going to whichever fade route wins outside on the release, and the FB flat check as the emergency outlet if both verticals are covered.
Defensive Reads
Press man coverage with no safety help over the top of either outside receiver is the biggest tell that this play is live and dangerous Watch for a single high safety rotating late since that usually means man coverage underneath on the fade routes If both cornerbacks are playing off with outside leverage and a safety sinks into the deep third, the fades will be tough to complete and the offense should look to the FB flat instead Zone coverage shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3 with underneath defenders sitting on the flat routes take away both the fade and the checkdown, forcing a low percentage throw Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge test the HB in protection, so a delayed pressure or contain blitz can collapse the pocket before the fade route develops
Usage Tips
Only call this near the goal line or in short yardage red zone situations where you have a size or jump ball mismatch at WR or TE
Check pre snap for man coverage indicators like a corner playing tight outside shade with no safety help over the top
If the defense shows two deep safeties or a clear zone shell, hot route the FB flat into a quick option or check down immediately since the fades will be covered
Pair this with HB Dive or FB Dive from the same personnel to keep the defense honest on early down goal line snaps before dialing up the fade
User the TE or X release manually if you see a jam happening at the line to help him win outside leverage against physical corners
