Breakdown

Goal Line Fade lines up out of the I Form Tight, 22 personnel, with two tight ends flanking the line and an isolated X receiver split out to the right. Both tight ends release vertically up the seams as decoy routes, the fullback releases out of the backfield on a check release swing to the left flat, and the isolated receiver runs the namesake fade route up the sideline. The primary read is the one on one fade to the outside receiver, with the quarterback throwing it up for a jump ball, and this is a man beater designed to exploit press or trail coverage in tight red zone or goal line situations.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify the cornerback alignment on the isolated X receiver, tight press alignment with no safety rotation over that side signals man coverage and a live fade throw. Watch the safety depth at the snap, if a safety rotates over the top of the fade route immediately this indicates zone coverage or a Cover 2 shell that shuts down the fade window. Key the linebackers at the snap, if they sink into zone drops instead of matching the tight end verticals, the offense should expect a zone defense and pivot to the fullback checkdown. User controlled defenders who bait the quarterback by shading outside then jumping the fade route late can undercut this throw, so watch for a defender sitting just inside the numbers pre-snap. Man beater press coverage without help is the ideal defensive alignment to attack, while Cover 2 or Cover 3 with sound outside contain and safety help over the top will take away the fade completely.

Usage Tips

Call this on the goal line or inside the five yard line when you have a size mismatch at receiver against a smaller cornerback.

Check pre-snap if the corner is in press man with no safety help over the top, that is the green light to throw the fade with a back shoulder placement.

If the defense shows two high shells or shows any hint of zone coverage, look off the fade and check down to the fullback swing route for a easy checkdown near the goal line.

Use the tight end vertical seam releases as clear out routes to occupy linebackers and safeties, do not force the ball to them unless the defense sits on the fade.

Pair this play with HB Lead Toss or FB Dive earlier in a sequence so the defense respects the run fake and stays out of deep zone shells, setting up the fade for an easier one on one look.
