Stacked fronts with a run fit safety in the box or a Sam linebacker crashing down on the counter step will consistently limit this play to minimal gains.

Usage Tips

Use HB Counter when linebackers are flowing hard to the play side or biting on run fakes since the misdirection punishes overaggressive pursuit. Pair this play with HB Toss and HB Stretch in the same set so defenders cannot key on backfield flow, forcing them to respect both quick perimeter runs and delayed counter action. Run it on second and short or first down to stay ahead of the sticks, since the counter step costs tempo and gets stuffed easily against fast flow if the defense is not biting. Watch the Mike linebacker's depth and gap responsibility before the snap, if he is stacked tight and crashing hard downhill this play will gash him. Sell the play fake with FB Fake HB Toss or PA Ctr Shot from the same personnel to keep second level defenders honest and slow their trigger on run reads.
