PA Ctr Shot is a play-action deep shot out of the I Form Tight formation with 22 personnel, designed to sell the center run fake before attacking the defense over the top. The fullback and offensive line execute the run blocking assignments to freeze linebackers and force the safeties to bite on the run action, opening up double moves and vertical routes downfield. The primary read progression starts with the deep outside shot route off the play fake, then works to the intermediate crossing or comeback route underneath if the shot is covered, with the checkdown to the fullback or tight end as the last resort against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap. If they step up hard on the run fake, the middle of the field is open for the crossing route. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap. Single high with the free safety cheating to one side signals man coverage underneath, so attack the opposite hash. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting deep centerfield. If he does not bite on the run fake, the shot route is contested and you should work the secondary read instead. Key the cornerback press alignment. Soft press with outside leverage usually means the corner has help over the top and will squeeze the shot route. Beware of a delayed blitz off the edge disguised as run support. If the defense shows run blitz fits pre-snap, get the ball out on the quicker underneath route rather than holding for the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the run fake actually holds the defense honest.

Check the safety depth pre-snap. If both safeties are sitting at 8 yards or shallower in a two high shell, this play has a much higher hit rate over the top.

Use hot routes to convert the underneath route into a drag or spot route if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top.

Pair this with HB Power O or HB Lead earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the run action and commits linebackers downhill.

Avoid calling this against known blitz-heavy teams on third and long since the play action fake takes extra time to develop and can get the quarterback hit before the shot route breaks open.
