HB Lead Toss out of the I Form Tight set is a pure outside zone run play built to get the HB moving laterally before turning upfield, with the fullback leading through the hole to seal off the first defender who shows outside the tackle box. The offensive line executes zone blocking steps to the play side, reaching linebackers before they can flow, while the FB reads the edge defender and adjusts his kickout or lead block based on how the defense sets its front. The primary read progression starts with the fullback identifying the force defender off the edge, then the HB reads the FB's block and the play side tackle's leverage to decide whether to bounce outside or cut back inside the alley.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and outside linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting inside the box in run support with tight alignment this play has almost no room to bounce outside. Identify quick flowing linebackers who key the FB motion, aggressive linebackers who overpursue the toss action allow easy cutback lanes for the HB once the fullback seals the edge. Look for a hard edge defender who consistently gets skinny and closes the alley from depth, this is the single defender who most often blows up outside toss concepts if left unblocked or unaccounted for. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with force players staying disciplined on the edge tend to shut this run down, since the extra run support defender can set the edge before the FB gets there. User controlled defenders flashing down from a deep safety spot late are a major threat, if the CPU or opponent triggers a safety fast flow toward the toss, expect the play to get strung out short of the sideline.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since this toss dies against stacked fronts with an extra run support defender cheating down.

Use your FB block as the primary key after the snap, take control of the HB and let the fullback climb to the second level, then cut off his hip rather than trying to outrun the edge defender to the sideline.

Pair this play with HB Toss and HB Toss Crack in the same series so the defense has to respect multiple toss action looks, then hit them with PA Boot or FB Fake HB Toss off the same footwork to punish over aggressive linebacker flow.

Best called on early downs, first and second and short to medium distance, when you want to establish outside run gap discipline and set up play action shots later in the drive.

Against defenses that show heavy inside blitz pre-snap, this toss action gets the ball outside the point of attack quickly and avoids the interior pressure entirely, making it a strong answer to nano blitz packages.
