PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept from the I Form Tight set that puts the QB on the move to the right side of the field. Off the fake handoff, the FB releases to the flat as the checkdown option while the TE runs a deep dig-like route working from the middle up and across the field. On the backside, the flanker runs a deep comeback breaking outside near the sideline, giving the QB a vertical shot if the sprint out draws the corner up. This is a play-action boot concept designed to attack zone defenders who bite on the run fake and to give the QB a rollout with easy access throws underneath and a deep shot outside if the coverage sinks.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers crashing down on the run fake, since that confirms they are keying the mesh point and the flat and short routes will be wide open. If the defense runs Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, the underneath flat route to the FB is the quickest access throw before the corner or flat defender can sink and wall it off. Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot underneath the TE crossing route, since that route travels through the middle of the field and is vulnerable to a jumped throw. Man coverage with blitz packages can be dangerous here because the sprint out limits the QB's ability to escape pressure to his left, so identify if the defense is bringing an overload blitz to that side pre-snap. Cover 2 with aggressive corners can shut down the backside comeback route if the corner sits on the route instead of biting on the play fake, so check corner depth and body positioning before committing to that throw.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the run fake actually holds the linebackers and forces them to respect the play-action.
Pre-snap, look for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers stacked close to the line, since a hard-charging front sells the fake better and opens the flat and comeback routes.
If you see man coverage across the board, hot route the FB flat route to a quick out or angle to beat a linebacker in man, since the FB is your easiest access throw on the sprint out.
If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, prioritize the comeback route on the backside since the corner has to respect the sprint and may open up a soft comeback window.
Pair this play with HB Toss or HB Power O out of the same I Form Tight set so the run action looks identical pre-snap, then mix in this PA shot to keep linebackers honest and defenders flowing hard downhill.
