PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprintout concept out of I Form Tight with 22 personnel on the field. Off the fake, the HB releases to the flat as the checkdown, one receiver runs a deep dig style crosser that settles in the middle of the field, and the outside receiver pushes vertically before breaking back to the sideline off the sprint action. The primary read progression starts with the deep breaking route off the sprint roll, works down to the intermediate crosser sitting over the middle, and finishes with the HB in the flat as the outlet. This is a play-action zone beater designed to hold linebackers with the run fake while the QB rolls to extend the pocket and simplify his reads to one side of the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch for Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells since the sprint action naturally attacks the seam vacated by the flat defender rolling with run support. If the defense shows a hard edge blitz to the side of the sprintout, expect the QB to be under pressure quickly, so user a defender to spy the flat and take away the checkdown. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap: if he sits shallow to jump the crosser, that opens the deep breaking route behind him for the offense. Man coverage with the corner shaded outside on the receiver who breaks back to the sideline is vulnerable since that route naturally creates separation working away from outside leverage. Disguise a lurk defender in the shallow middle zone to sit on the crosser, since that route is the QB's first easy completion off the sprint roll and taking it away forces a tougher, later read.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs in run heavy personnel counts to keep defenses honest and sell the play-action fake against teams that key run blitzes.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the sprintout naturally rolls away from the deep half and opens up the intermediate crosser.

If the defense shows man coverage with the linebackers pressing the box, hot route the HB to a wheel or seam to attack a linebacker in space instead of settling for the flat checkdown.

Pair this play with HB Power O or 26 Duo earlier in a series so the play-action fake actually freezes second level defenders and linebackers bite on the run action.

Roll the pocket away from pressure by calling this into the blitz side if the defense shows an overload look, since the sprintout naturally buys extra time against edge pressure from the backside.
