HB Iso out of I Form Tight 22 personnel is a straight downhill power run play designed to let the fullback lead block through the hole for the halfback. The offensive line blocks straight ahead at the point of attack while the fullback isolates on the first linebacker showing through the A or B gap, giving the halfback a clear read to follow his lead blocker. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression starts with the fullback's block: the halfback presses the line, reads whether the FB seals the play-side linebacker inside or outside, then cuts off that block.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked boxes with eight or more defenders near the line since heavy fronts and blitz packages designed to stuff the A gap will beat HB Iso before the fullback can get his block set. Key the middle linebacker's depth and alignment pre-snap, because a linebacker sitting tight to the line in run support signals he is ready to shoot the gap and meet the fullback quickly. On the defensive side, user the strong side linebacker or middle linebacker and attack the fullback's lead block directly to blow up the point of attack before the halfback can commit to a lane. Look for safety rotation down into the box pre-snap, since an eighth defender crashing down turns this into a numbers disadvantage for the offense and shuts down the iso lane. If the defense shows blitz with both inside linebackers crowding the line, expect penetration that beats the fullback's block before he can climb, so be ready to bounce the run outside if you are on offense.
Usage Tips
Use HB Iso in short yardage and goal line situations where you need a physical, downhill gap to convert third and short or push in for a score.
Before the snap, check the box count and linebacker depth since Iso hits hardest against light boxes with only two or three second level defenders stacked near the line.
Take manual control of the fullback right after the snap to aim his block at the most dangerous blitzing linebacker rather than letting the CPU logic pick a target.
Pair HB Iso with HB Power O and HB Off Tackle to keep defenders guessing between an inside iso hit and a wider gap scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Mix in FB Dive from the same personnel to sell the same fullback action before hitting HB Iso later in a series, since both plays start with similar formation and backfield alignment.
