HB Lead out of the I Form Tight set is a straightforward power run play built on an Iso blocking scheme. The fullback leads through the hole to isolate and take on the first inside linebacker, clearing a lane for the halfback to run behind him, while the tight end and offensive line seal the edge and interior gaps. This is a run play with no pass option, so there is no read progression in the traditional sense: the primary read is simply hitting the hole behind your fullback and reacting to whichever linebacker he blocks, bouncing outside if the alley is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Check the depth of the middle linebacker before the snap, if he is sitting shallow expecting run, this play faces a tougher path through the hole. Identify whether the defense is in a run-fit front like 4-3 Normal or 46, these alignments funnel extra defenders into the box and can bog down the fullback lead block. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting downhill in the A or B gap, a well-timed nano blitz or user fill can blow this play up before the fullback gets to the second level. Look for light boxes against nickel or dime personnel, those fronts lack the extra body needed to stop the lead block consistently. Post-snap, track whether the fullback wins his block quickly, if he gets stonewalled at the point of attack, bounce the run outside immediately rather than trying to force it up the gut.

Usage Tips

Use HB Lead on early downs when you need to establish tempo and force the defense to commit extra defenders into the box.

Watch pre-snap for stacked fronts or six plus defenders in the box, if the defense loads up, consider switching to a play-action shot off this same look instead.

Manually control your fullback at the snap if you are confident reading the linebacker flow, this lets you seal the correct rusher rather than trusting the CPU logic.
