HB Stretch out of the I Form Tight 22 personnel package shows a tight backfield alignment with the fullback leading through the hole and the halfback taking a lateral handoff toward the play side edge. The offensive line flows in unison to reach block and wall off outside zone lanes, giving the runner a horizontal stretch read across the formation before he plants and cuts upfield. This is a pure zone run play with no route concept to diagram, and the primary read progression is a bounce, bang, or bend decision based on how fast the defensive line and edge defenders flow horizontally.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker first, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens immediately behind them. Watch for a scraping middle linebacker, fast flow to the play side signals a strong stretch defense and means the offense should bend the run back inside. Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety often means the box is light and stretch runs to the edge have room, while two deep safeties can signal extra run support underneath. Look for user controlled defenders flying downhill off the snap, this is a common nano blitz tell and stretch runs are vulnerable if the play side gets penetrated before the line can reach block. Overloaded fronts or heavy blitz packages with linebackers stacked tight to the line can blow up the zone track, so audible to a quick pass or opposite gap run when you see this alignment.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap to count the box, if the defense shows six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a clean numbers advantage. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked or downhill linebackers tip run support and make the bend read tougher, so be ready to bounce it outside.
