Breakdown

FB Dive out of the I Form Tight 22 personnel is a downhill interior run play with the fullback taking the handoff and hitting the A gap immediately behind the center. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with a standard run scheme, while the HB leads through the hole to pick up the first flowing linebacker as an extra blocker. This is a base run play designed to attack an undisciplined front, and the primary read progression is aiming point at the center, then bouncing to whichever A or B gap opens based on defensive tackle penetration.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive tackles at snap: if they get vertical push into the backfield the fullback has nowhere to go and this run dies quickly. Watch for a Mike linebacker sitting at depth with eyes in the backfield, since a quick downhill trigger from the user-controlled linebacker will blow this up before the fullback can build momentum. This run struggles against goal line and heavy fronts where extra defenders are stacked directly over the center and guards. It gains the most yardage against nickel or dime packages that substitute out linebackers for smaller defensive backs, leaving the box light. Watch the safety depth pre-snap: if a safety is creeping down into the box as a run support defender, expect the play to get sniffed out quickly if the fullback commits to a single gap too early.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles. Check the pre-snap alignment of the defensive tackles: if they are shaded wide in a 4i or 3 technique, the middle should stay clean for the FB to burst through. Use this play to set up FB Fake HB Toss and PA FB Flat later in the drive since the fullback action mirrors this dive look and forces linebackers to respect the run fit. Avoid calling this against heavy stacked fronts or when the defense shows blitz with both linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap. Pair this with HB Iso and HB Lead in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing on which back gets the ball out of I Form Tight.
