FB Dive out of the I Form Tight 22 personnel is a straight downhill run play that hands the ball to the fullback for a quick hit through the interior of the line. The offensive line blocks straight ahead at the point of attack while the halfback lead blocks or fakes to sell run action, and the diagram shows the fullback taking a direct path just off center between the guards. This is a pure run play with no route concept to beat man or zone coverage, and the primary read is simply identifying the first crease that opens up front, either the A gap or B gap depending on how the defensive line shifts at the snap.

Defensive Reads

On defense, key the fullback the instant the ball is snapped since he is the only ball carrier option on this play and there is no play action disguise. Watch for a Mike linebacker blitzing straight up the middle, this shuts down FB Dive immediately by meeting the fullback before he reaches the line of scrimmage. A stacked run defense front with a nine man box and linebackers at shallow depth (four yards or less) will consistently blow this play up for minimal or negative yardage. If the defensive tackles are lined up in shaded gap techniques rather than head up, that signals room for the fullback to squeeze through, so user the closest linebacker downhill immediately. Cover 0 and Cover 1 run blitz calls with a spy or extra crasher on the fullback neutralize this play, while light boxes with only six or seven defenders let the interior gaps stay clean for a positive gain.

Usage Tips

Use FB Dive on short yardage and goal line situations like third and one or fourth and one because the quick hitting design beats slow linebacker reactions before they can fill the gap.

Check the defensive tackle alignment pre snap, if both defensive tackles are shaded wide in a 4i or 5 technique the A gap will be wide open for an explosive gain.

Pair this play with HB Lead and HB Iso from the same I Form Tight set to keep linebackers guessing between fullback dive and tailback runs, since the line action looks nearly identical at the snap.

Avoid calling this against stacked box looks with eight or nine defenders in the box, since there is no misdirection or cutback design to punish overloaded fronts.

Use FB Dive early in a drive to bait the defense into loading the box, then follow up with HB Lead Toss or PA FB Flat off the same personnel to attack the perimeter once linebackers start crashing down.
