The diagram shows a deep corner or dig breaking to the outside from the boot side receiver (red route), an intermediate crosser working from the backfield or slot across the field and up the seam (yellow route), and a flat route from the fullback or tight end sitting underneath as the checkdown (blue route). The primary read progression starts with the deep breaking route on the boot side, works down to the crossing route settling in the middle of the field, and finishes with the flat route as the outlet against pressure or a jumped throwing lane.

Defensive Reads

This play beats man coverage because the crossing route creates natural separation against man defenders trailing from the backside, and the rollout action stresses contain defenders in space. Zone defenses with a hard flat defender can jump the underneath route, so watch for cornerbacks or linebackers sinking into the flat area immediately after the snap. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a firm cloud corner on the boot side, expect the deep corner route to be well defended, so prioritize the crossing route in the void behind the linebackers. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the QB on the boot side, since a disciplined spy or contain defender can shut down both the run option and the throwing lane. A blitz that brings backside pressure can beat this play before the fake fully develops, so check pre-snap for overloaded fronts or extra rushers stacked away from the boot direction.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the run fake believable and hold linebackers on the play fake longer.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the boot side, work the crossing route into the vacated middle of the field instead.

Use the rollout to buy extra time against user blitzers, the boot naturally moves the pocket away from edge pressure and gives you a run option with the QB if everything is covered.

Pair this with HB Toss or HB Lead Toss earlier in a series so the linebackers start biting on the run action, making the boot fake even more effective later.

Hot route the flat defender's man to a shallow drag if you are facing man coverage, since the underneath flat route can get picked off by aggressive user linebackers sitting on the boot side.
