PA Boot from I Form Tight (22 personnel) opens with a play-action fake to sell the run and boots the QB out to the flat side. Off the fake, the TE releases from the line and boots out to the flat before climbing vertically up the sideline for a corner route (red), the backside receiver runs a deep crosser from the opposite side of the formation all the way across the field (yellow), and the fullback or extra blocker checks release into a flat route (blue) as the underneath outlet. This is a play-action boot concept designed to attack zone defenses and linebackers who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going flat route first as the checkdown, then to the deep crossing route working across the middle, and finally to the corner route as the low-percentage shot play up the sideline.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a run-heavy front with linebackers stacked tight to the box, since that alignment is exactly what this boot concept is designed to exploit once they flow toward the fake. Check safety depth and shell, a two-high shell with safeties sitting deep will squeeze the corner route and force you to live underneath with the flat and crosser. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB on the boot side, as a disciplined spy or contain defender can blow up the entire concept by forcing an early or errant throw. Look for zone defenders like a flat corner or curl-flat linebacker sinking under the crosser, since that traffic can clog the middle read and delay your progression. Man coverage teams that blitz off the edge into the boot side are the biggest threat here, since pressure arrives before the corner route fully develops, so recognize overload blitzes pre-snap by counting defenders to the play side.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you have already established the run game with HB Toss, HB Power O, or HB Off Tackle from this same I Form Tight set so linebackers respect the play fake and bite forward. Key the middle linebacker and safeties pre-snap, if they are showing run support depth or crashing down in run fits, this boot concept will hit the corner route or crosser wide open behind them. Roll with the QB on the boot and use the flat route as your check-down against blitzes since it is the fastest developing throw, but do not force the corner route into a two-high shell where a deep safety can rob it. Mix this play in after a few successful runs from this personnel group to keep defenses honest, then sequence it with PA Sprint HB Flat or PA FB Flat later in the drive since those plays look similar out of the same formation but attack different levels. Against man coverage, watch for the deep crossing route to create natural separation off traffic near the formation, it is your best man-beater in this concept.
