Both outside receivers break inside on quick slants that cross the middle of the field, the right slot runs a corner route up the sideline, and the tight end releases into a shallow drag underneath the slants, giving the quarterback a high low crossing read against man coverage. This is a rhythm based man beater built for a quick one read progression: the primary read is the near side slant, working through the crossing slant on the other side if the first is covered, with the tight end drag as the checkdown against underneath zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth: two high safeties often signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which lets linebackers sit on the crossing slants and jump the route. Watch for press man corners on the outside receivers, since man coverage with no safety help over the top is exactly what this slant concept is designed to exploit. Post snap, key the middle linebacker drop, if he sinks into the drag lane immediately he is taking away the tight end checkdown and forcing the quarterback into the slant window. Beware disguised blitzes that send a linebacker through the tight end release lane, since it can collapse the pocket before the drag or slant fully develops. This play struggles against Cover 3 sink or a rat linebacker sitting in the shallow zone, since both crossers and the drag get clogged by defenders reading the quarterback's eyes.

Usage Tips

Fire this out of a quick shotgun snap on early downs or third and short since the slants develop in under two seconds and beat blitz pressure before it arrives.

Presnap, identify if the corners are pressed on the outside receivers, since the slants will win instantly against man press if the corner does not get a clean jam.

Hot route the backside slant into a quick out if you see Cover 2 with hard flat corners sitting on the underneath crossers.

Use the tight end drag as your answer versus zone drops from linebackers who wall off the slant lanes, it is the built in zone beater conversion.

Pair this play with Slants HB Flat or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and RPO reads off the same formation look.
