Breakdown

PA Wheel Switch is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Slot Open with 20 personnel that uses a switch release to spring the wheel route. The two outside receivers on the right run vertical stem routes into the deep half, while on the left the slot receiver runs a wheel up the sideline after crossing underneath the outside receiver, who runs a short out to the flat. The play-action fake to the HB creates a run-pass conflict for linebackers, and the primary read progression starts with the wheel route working against man coverage leakage before working to the flat route as a checkdown and then to the two vertical routes on the far side if the wheel gets no separation.

Defensive Reads

Check pre-snap safety depth, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the wheel route will have a safety waiting over the top and you should look to the flat or vertical routes instead. Watch the flat defender at the snap, in man coverage he will try to switch off with the outside receiver's out route, and any hesitation there is your green light to throw the wheel immediately. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, if the linebackers are stacked tight to the line expecting run, the play-action fake will hold them and open up easy yardage underneath and up the seam. Look for a user controlled defender flashing down to take away the wheel route, since that lurk threat is the biggest coverage bust risk on this design in zone coverage. Recognize blitz packages with overloaded fronts, since the play-action fake can stall against fast interior pressure that disrupts the QB before the wheel route fully develops.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action fake by holding the HB fake through the animation before rolling your eyes to the wheel route, since defenders keying the backfield will bite and open the wheel window.

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short so the run fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers stay frozen instead of dropping immediately into coverage.

Check the flat defender and cornerback alignment pre-snap, if you see man coverage or a blitz look with the corner playing tight to the slot, the wheel route should win over the top almost every time.

Pair this call with Backs Cross or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series to get defenders conditioned to the run action, then hit PA Wheel Switch once linebackers start crashing downhill on run fakes.

If the defense shows a two high safety shell, hot route the far side outside receiver into a comeback or dig to give yourself a quicker underneath answer instead of forcing the wheel into a deep half safety.
