PA Wheel Switch is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Slot Open that uses a route switch concept to spring the wheel route out of the backfield or slot. The play-action fake holds the underneath defenders while the switch release on the near side crosses with the flat runner, creating a natural pick before the wheel route climbs up the sideline. On the backside, two receivers run vertical breaking routes off a stem to stretch the defense horizontally, giving you a true half-field concept away from the switch. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route out of the switch concept, then works to the backside vertical breaks if the wheel is capped by a flat defender or deep half safety.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a single high or two high safety shell, since a two high look often signals a flat defender who can sink and jump the wheel route. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap. If they bite hard on the play-action fake, the wheel route will have a clean throwing lane up the sideline. Post-snap, key the flat or curl defender on the switch side. If he stays wide instead of following the switch release, he is sitting on the wheel and you should progress to the backside verticals. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the switch release, since the natural rub disrupts the defender trailing the wheel route. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing cornerback in the flat zone can undercut the wheel route early, so be ready to climb the ladder to the backside vertical breaks instead of forcing the throw.
Use this play on early downs when the defense is selling run based on personnel or formation tendencies, since the play-action fake needs linebackers stepping up to hit.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender on the switch side. If he sits low and wide, the wheel route will win vertically once the switch route clears the traffic.
Against man coverage, trust the switch to create natural rub and separation for the wheel route, and throw it on time before the safety can rotate over the top.
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, work the backside vertical routes since the corner and safety on the switch side often have outside contain responsibility that closes the wheel window.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then hit PA Wheel Switch once they start crashing downhill on early down run fakes.
