Breakdown

Mtn Flood is a classic flood concept out of Shotgun Split Slot Open, sending three receivers into the same third of the field at three distinct levels (deep, intermediate, and flat) to overload a single side of the defense. The concept is a zone beater at its core, designed to stress cornerback and safety zone drops on one side while the backside is left with a simple outlet or dig to punish man coverage rotation. Your primary read progression starts deep to short: go through the vertical clearing route first, then work down to the corner or out breaker, and finally settle on the flat route as your checkdown against a hard squeeze.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the free safety alignment and cornerback depth on the flood side, since a rolled up corner or single high safety indicates man coverage that can be exploited with the backside hot route instead. Post-snap, watch the flat defender key on the shallow route first, because if he sinks too deep the flat throw is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Track the deep half or deep third defender responsible for the vertical clearing route, if he bites on the intermediate breaker the go route behind him is a big play waiting to happen. Beware of user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone who can jump the corner or out route, so use pump fakes or eye manipulation to move them off their spot. This concept struggles against disguised pattern match coverages like Cover 6 or Cover 4 Palm where the corner and safety switch responsibilities based on route distribution, so have a checkdown or scramble drill mentality ready if the picture looks muddy.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick alert to identify if the defense is showing a two high shell or rotating to single high, since Mtn Flood thrives against split safety looks that leave one deep defender responsible for the entire flooded side. Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells where the flat defender has to choose between the shallow route and the intermediate breaker, creating natural rubs on the flat and out routes. Hot route the backside receiver into a dig or drag if you see man coverage across the board so you have an answer away from the flood concept. This play works best on second and medium to third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure. Pair Mtn Flood with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Z Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the flood side after seeing it once, and mix in Mtn RPO Peek Swing to keep linebackers honest against the same formation.
