Slot Post Angle out of Shotgun Split Slot Open sends the backside outside receiver on a deep dig, the outside receiver on the strong side on a corner route, the slot receiver on the signature deep post, and the running back releases into an angle route out of the backfield with the offensive line holding up in pass protection. The post from the slot is the primary read against single high safety looks, with the angle route serving as the checkdown against pressure or when the deep shot is not there. This is a man beater concept that stresses the deep middle of the field while giving the QB a built-in outlet to the flat off the backfield angle route.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth before the snap, a deep single high safety cheating toward the slot receiver signals he is keying the post and will jump the route. Watch the linebacker responsible for the backfield, if he widens out to cover the angle route immediately after the snap it opens up more time for the post to develop downfield. Identify two high safety shells pre-snap, this coverage shell puts extra help over the post and forces the QB to work the corner route or dig instead. Key the cornerback over the slot receiver at the snap, if he opens his hips and runs with the post in man coverage you have a legitimate one on one shot down the field. Watch for a hard blitz off the edge, since this concept relies on a full route tree developing, a well timed pressure package can force a quick checkdown to the angle route before the post opens up.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the free safety alignment, if he is rotated to one side or shows single high with no rotation, the post from the slot has a clean lane to hit for six.

Use the angle route out of the backfield as your answer against blitz-heavy defenses, it releases quickly into open grass and beats nano blitz pressure looks.

Best called on second or third and medium to long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells or bring pressure, since the angle route punishes both.
