PA Tulsa Pop is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Split Slot Open designed to hit a deep shot off run action while giving the QB a checkdown escape valve. The play-action fake sells the run look, then the backside X receiver runs a deep post while the near outside WR pushes vertical on a corner/wheel style route to stretch the safety over the top. Underneath, the slot receivers work a flat and dig combo with the HB releasing on a shallow drag, giving the QB a quick answer if the deep shots are covered. The primary read starts with the post shot to the backside, then progresses to the vertical route, and finally checks down to the flat/drag combo underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or single high, since two high shells tell you to attack the vertical route on the numbers and single high tells you to respect a possible robber underneath the post. Watch for corners playing outside leverage or bail technique at the snap, which signals zone drops that open up the post route working to the middle of the field. Key the play side linebacker after the snap, if he steps up hard to bite on the run fake you have a clean throwing lane to the drag and flat combo underneath. User controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle or lurking at the sticks can jump the post route, so scan for a rat in the hole before committing to the deep shot. Heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge will pressure the play action fake quickly, so recognize overload blitz looks pre snap and be ready to get the ball out fast to the flat or drag as a hot read.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and short when defenses are geared up to stop the run, since the play action freezes linebackers and opens the deep post.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties bail to the post side at the snap you likely have Cover 2 or Cover 4 and should look to the vertical route on the opposite hash for a one on one matchup.

Against man coverage, trust the post route to win against inside leverage corners and be ready to pull the trigger with anticipation before the break.

If the defense shows single high safety pre snap, respect the possibility of a Cover 1 or Cover 3 robber and be ready to work the underneath flat and drag combo instead of forcing the deep ball.

Pair this play with Mtn Flood or PA Flood earlier in a series to condition the defense to sit on flood concepts, then hit PA Tulsa Pop for the double move over the top when linebackers start jumping underneath routes.
