Defensive Reads
Check pre-snap safety alignment, since a single high safety who cheats toward the mesh crossers leaves the corner strike wide open on the perimeter. Watch cornerback depth and press alignment on the outside receiver running the corner strike, as soft coverage invites an easy pitch and catch on the sideline shot. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing hard toward the mesh point, which signals they are trying to jump the crossers and open up the drag or corner strike behind them. Identify zone drops from linebackers sitting in the shallow middle, since that clogs the mesh crossers and forces the quarterback to work the swing or corner strike instead. This concept struggles against disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with underneath zone defenders sinking into the mesh area, so recognize two deep safeties presnap as a sign to check into a different concept or trust the corner strike sideline throw.
Usage Tips
Presnap, look for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight with no safety help over the top of the mesh crossers, since the pick action at the mesh point is designed to shake man defenders. Use the corner strike route as your home run shot against Cover 1 or Cover 3 if the deep defender bites on the underneath traffic. Hot route the swing back into a flat route if you see the defense sitting a linebacker in the shallow zone, giving you a quicker outlet against zone drops.
